Families United Network
Families United Network (F.U.N.), a
program of Cape Cod Child Development, is a community support program for
families in the Town of Barnstable.
Administered by a paid staff of three and parent volunteers, there
are six main components to the F.U.N. program:
Parent/Child Playgroups We currently offer 16 weekly parent/child
playgroups throughout the community of Barnstable in a variety of settings including
local libraries, a local nursing home (where we provide an intergenerational
music and movement class) and at our Cape Cod Child Development campus at 83
Pearl Street in Hyannis. As funding becomes available, we also offer
father/child playgroups, giving dads the opportunity to meet with other parents
while also spending quality time with their child(ren).

Parent Education Parent education workshops offered through our program
have included effective positive discipline, pre-natal yoga, infant/child CPR,
toileting and sleeping routines, infant massage, sign language with children,
finding quality child care, and activities to do with young children.

Support Groups for Parents and Caregivers We offer Parents Helping Parents weekly support
groups for families. Also, a parent volunteer organizes a “Mom’s Night Out”
monthly group for mothers looking to meet other moms and have “adult time".
Some activities have included a night at the movies, scrap booking, dining out
and swimming at a local pool.
Referrals to Community Resources for Family Support Including
Home Visits Our program staff coordinates and distributes
the Mid Cape Family Resource Guide, a handbook of resources for families. Staff
also assist families in finding resources for parent education opportunities,
local support programs etc.
Lending Library Our program maintains a lending library of parenting
information including helpful books on parenting topics, parent education videos,
children’s books and a variety of educational brochures. We also have a lending
pass to the Cape Cod Children’s Museum and Zooquarium that we make available to
families.
Community Family Events Our staff members work with other community programs such
as the Barnstable Community Partnership Program and the Barnstable Recreation
Department to offer large family/community events each year. Some events we
have spearheaded in the past include: a Halloween Party, the Winter Family
Event and the Spring Family Event. Other smaller community/family events
include the intergenerational Valentine’s party, spring flings,
intergenerational petting zoo activities, “Donuts with Daddy”, “Muffins with
Mommy” and “Jammin’ in my Jammies” family dance.
Families United Network is funded by a Massachusetts
Family Network grant from the Department of Education, in association with the
Barnstable Public Schools. The mission of the program is to support and serve
families with children from the prenatal stages to age four in the seven
villages that comprise the town of Barnstable, regardless of ethnic, racial,
socio-economic backgrounds and abilities.
