 Head Start Program

Head Start is an early education preschool program funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Massachusetts Department of Education, that serves eligible families on Cape Cod and in Wareham. Working with children ages three to five, Head Start offers full and part-day classrooms in 17 locations, as well as a home-based option where staff visits the family. Staff provides a host of services to the entire family, including health, nutrition, social services, mental health services, parent involvement and special education. There are four options of Head Start, all of which provide a child-centered curriculum that is individualized to strengthen each child's skills.

Home Based Option

Cape Cod Child Development staff visits with the family weekly to help support and educate parents on how to be the best educator of their child. This option is usually partnered with a public school preschool so the children get the benefit of a preschool experience as well as home schooling. This program operates on a school year calendar.

Part Day Center Based Option

This option offers a half-day preschool program for the child and also operates on a school year calendar. Transportation and nutrition services are offered to the child in this program.

Full Day Center Based Option

This program offers full day preschool programming on a year round basis. Families are usually either working or in a training program or schooling.

Enrollment is based on eligibility. For more information on any of the Head Start program options or to see if your family qualifies for enrollment, please contact a Head Start Intake Counselor at 800-974-8860.

In addition, the Head Start Program offers a variety of developmental programs for children, youth and families, including:

  • Middle School Literacy - available to middle school students in the towns of Barnstable and Dennis who are paired with a Head Start classroom and participate weekly in the literacy-based activities of the preschoolers.
  • Dental Program - an innovative program offering dental services to children enrolled in the agency's Head Start program. Collaborating to provide these services are Cape Cod Child Development, CVS Charitable Trust, Delta Dental, and Cape Cod Community College.
  • Power Lunch - This program gives businesses, individual community members and civic groups the opportunity to volunteer in Head Start classrooms as little as one hour each month. Volunteers visit the classroom, read a story and enjoy lunch with the children.
  • Male Involvement - The Head Start Program is very interested in having positive male role models involved in its program. In particular, the agency welcomes any public servants who can mentor children on being a positive member of the community.
